Fires are growing faster in the western United States. The fastest of them – termed “fast fires” – often erupt near towns and account for most structural wildfire damage according to researchers who analyzed over 60,000 fires from 2001 to 2020.

My role

When the fires broke out in L.A., we worked as a team to come up with possible story angles. My editor gave me the lead on this dataset on “fast fires”. I looked into it and pitched that we could add to the conversation by showing wildfires are getting faster and the fastest of them mostly pop up near people. I conceptualized the three graphics on the page and worked closely with my colleagues to shape them into finished pieces.
